Consequences of having a wasp nest

Wasps are attracted to sweet and sugary things, so could contaminate your food. If you disturb a nest, many wasps can attack, their sting can be very painful, and should you be allergic to their stings, can cause anaphylactic shock.

Wasps build nests in numerous places, here are some of them:

  • Lofts
  • Roofs
  • In the eaves
  • Hollow Trees
  • Wall Cavities
  • Bird Nesting Boxes
  • Air vents

Hornet (Vespa crabro)

APPEARANCE: Up to 4cm in length. Dark brown and yellow, sometimes black and white with a narrow waist and a larger head (vertex) than the wasp.

LIFE CYCLE: Only fertilised females who survive the winter will emerge in the spring and form new nests.  At the end of the summer the queen gives birth to female queens and male hornets. The queens are fertilised by the males, who then die, and the queens then hibernate for the winter in order to continue the cycle in the Spring.

FEEDING HABITS: Hornets feed mainly on insects. They also prey on honey bees and can totally decimate a honey bee colony.  They have a diet of sugar and protein, and can feed on fruit still on the tree.

OCCURENCE: Southern England.

Only usually sting when defending the nest.

Do not attempt to destroy a nest yourself. If you find hornets call Greenthink Pest Control for the safe treatment or removal of your hornet nest at a competitive price.
